I first saw him on my first day in Jamaica. He was leisurely walking the beach, every so often kicking at the tide as the beautiful blue ocean crashed onto the white sands. Despite the beauty of the island; he stood out to me as the most striking thing on the beach. The morning sun shone down on him, illuminating his every step like a spot light on a stage. It had been a while since I felt good about myself. At 235lbs I was more than 50lbs overweight and more than a bit uncomfortable with my appearance. I mean, people would always refer to me as the cute chubby guy, or the pretty fat boy. But I just didn’t like it. I know they were just trying to give me a compliment, but the chubby/ fat part completely canceled it out in my eyes. But I guess I’m a somewhat good looking guy. But that’s just a good mix of genetic. I’m light brown skin and I have really light blue eyes, and really thick lips. Racially, I’m all over the place [Black, Dominican, Dutch, Portuguese]. Pretty much take all those most dominate physical traits, throw them together, and that’s me in a nutshell. And to a lot of people thats great, that’s attractive, but its just not enough for me. My weight just bothers me way too much. So, I decided to join a gym. But it was way harder than I thought. And I ended up only lasting two weeks before I quit. But on my last visit there, I ran into this guy I used to know, Ryan.

Artist, Manuel Acevedo, grew up in L.A. and Pico Rivera, CA. In an interview from AdelanteMagazine he says, “It’s the people of our community who inspire my work, the power of gay Latinos”. Specializing in portraits and figuring drawings of Gay Latino men, Acevedo captures a regal elegance within sensual scenes. There is a pop-art element to his work that is very appealing but not at all grotesque that inspires a feeling of nostalgia. He uses Indian Ink, technical pens and watercolors in most of his work, occasionally utilizing pencils as well. He mixes a monochromatic palette with bursts of color, strategically placed in specific areas within a piece. Some have thought that, with the popularity of such sites as Adam4adam.com (A4A) and Bgclive.com (Black Gay Chat or BGC) (online dating sites for gay men), the day of bathhouses or similar venues were a thing of the past. However, most major cities around the World still have bathhouses that boast steady attendance, especially around certain holidays and (of course) Gay pride events. Although homosexuality has become more ‘mainstream’ in recent years, there also still remains a number of ‘Down-Low’ or closeted Gay men that find it easier and/or more secure to have sex at parties instead of their own homes or those of other individuals. Is Bodybuilding Homoerotic? VIDEO: You Be the Judge
Male bodybuilding and fitness competitions feature muscle-bound men parading around in skimpy underwear or swimsuits to show off their physiques that they spend years and countless hours constructing at the gym. How does a guy know what the ‘ideal physique’ is unless he finds a man’s form attractive in some respect? They must admire the guys who achieve a certain level of fitness. This achievement is often times based solely on appearance. You will frequently see groups of bodybuilders in a gym working out with one another admiring and/or critiquing each others features (big arms, defined traps, huge lats). They will also pose for each other to display their progress. This doesn’t mean that these men are GAY per say, but that they have some sort of appreciation for the image of the ideal male form. If it is not homo-eroticism, it’s definitely homo-appreciation.

In 1998, HBO featured, in a segment for their “Real Sex” Documentary TV show, a group of Black Male Strippers in Philadelphia. For this blogger, being all of 12 years old, this program solidified my attractions to men. If I had any doubt before, it was all gone with seeing this segment. Keep in mind, this is from 1998, before the age of YouTube or any Tube video porn sites, so this may seem a bit tame for today. However, it’s still quite hot and brings back some nostalgia.
